Tennessee Association of Dance will bring 2018 Tennessee Dance Festival to Middle Tennessee State University on September 21-23, 2018. The Festival will host an international ensemble of dance teachers and dance companies inspired by cultural diversity.
This festival provides opportunities for students to win scholarships and audition for summer intensives, unique dance training classes for students between the ages of nine and twenty-two, public performances showcasing quality companies and university groups from Tennessee, as well as performance groups from other parts of the country.
“Our mission is to insure that dance is a vital part of the culture in Tennessee,” said Chell Parkins, the Executive Director of Tennessee Association of Dance, which coordinates the event thanks to a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.
Scholarships, College, and Summer Intensive Auditions
According to Parkins, Tennessee Dance Festival offers a class where students can audition for summer scholarships and college placement.
“This year,” said Parkins, “two one-thousand dollar scholarships will be offered for students to attend a summer dance intensive of their choice that is approved by TAD. Past recipients have attended American Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre, and Steps on Broadway, and have gone on to pursue careers in dance.”
Tennessee Association of Dance often invites scholarship alumni to teach at the festival after years of establishing themselves in the field outside the region.
Besides dance company representatives, the audition class will be attended by teachers from institutions and colleges offering placement and/or scholarships to their programs. This year’s list of institutions and colleges include: The Ailey School (www.theaileyschool.edu/), Kennesaw State University (www.arts.kennesaw.edu/dance ),
Middle State Tennessee University (www.mtsu.edu/programs/dance/ ), University of Memphis (www.memphis.edu/theatre), University of Utah School of Dance Ballet Program ( www.dance.utah.edu ), Western Kentucky University(www.wku.edu/theatre-and-dance/ ).
The two $1,000 Scholarships for summer study awarded are the Tennessee Association of Dance’s Allegro and Allegra Scholarships. Students competing for the awards must attend audition classes in ballet, modern, and jazz technique. Some other programs attended by previous winners are UNC North Carolina School of the Arts, Alonzo King LINES Ballet School, Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Bates Dance Festival, and the Julliard School.
